But sadly, it was not meant to be. The Baguette Boys visited the vault just after midnight, and used the perfect harmonic frequencies of crackling crust to confuse the system. By 1am the safe was void of the original bakers's dozen—just a note that simply said, "no pain."

  • The Baguette Boys had pulled off 12 perfect pastry heists in a row. The next one would be their baker’s dozen. It needed to be a spectacular score, and hopefully big enough for them to retire from carbohydrate larceny. What would it be?

  • The bread brain trust stayed up all night batting around the dough of ill-formed ideas but nothing seemed to rise to the occasion. Just as the early sun peaked through the glass of the underground bakery, one of the boys, crackling with excitement, leapt up with a brilliant idea.

  • Perhaps there was another safe! The Baguette Boys looked around the room. There in the corner was a large oven. Could this be it? Was it the butter option? Rye not? They approached the glowing appliance. Slowly, their leader opened the rickety door.

  • One Boy reached inside & withdrew a jar filled with a gassy, goopy gunk. The sight of it forced a gasp. "It's the mother starter," one of the Boys whispered. Cradling the jar like a baby, they rushed home to make a sourdough greater than any the baking world had batched & shared.
