The Note

The minutes passed slowly, as they always did in Math class. Darla looked around the room in search of distraction. Most of the students looked equally bored, except Steve. STEVE. Always showing off his division skills. Today, however, would be different.

As Steve was solving another division problem on the board, she saw Jimmy discreetly pass a note beneath the desk to Crystal. Crystal received many letters and confessions, but this was the first time she saw Crystal read it and pass it on. In fact, it was going around the class.

By the time Rietje got the note, things took an unexpected turn for the worst.

Rietje had been in some tough situations in her life but this took the cake. She put the post-it down and slowly walked out of the conference room, doing her best to avoid eye contact with her clients. By her estimation, she had one hour to set things right.

The note revealed the location of the notebook. Steve had been embezzling from school since freshman year. Rietje was an undercover agent, her clients, the classmates, had brought her in. His notebook was all she needed, now she just had to grab it and the case would be closed.
