For the first time in my life, my tears weren’t for her but for me. I had wasted years trying to dry her eyes, mend her pain. Trying desperately to be good enough so she’d see me for me. Now I knew that was never going to happen, not really. I had to let go and find my own way.

This was harder than I thought. I sat there with my legs over the ledge of the bridge watching the leaves go by with the current. I realized that there wasn’t much to this. I just need to let it go. I need to let go of Ms. Mittens. School has not let it go.

Ms. Mittens was the most demanding and frustrating teacher I’d ever had. She was also responsible for all of my success. Without her lessons I never would have become a pilot. How ironic that she had died in a parachute cargo drop accident.

Ms. Mittens made some mistakes. Back to my successes. Piloting is hard, but the school was decent. “And that, lady and gents, is why you are here today… to help support our school.” I looked around the room to a group of bewildered faces.
