He ran across the grass like it was covered in lava.

The blades felt prickly under his feet, but the quicker he moved, the sooner he'd arrive at Bethany's. Her last message echoed in his mind:

"hey, nate. i'm not making it. thank you for your support. love, b"

Bethany hated nicknames, would never use initials, and was an absolute stickler for proper capitalization. Either she was in distress, or someone was impersonating her. He’d find out soon enough: he was 2 blocks away from her house.

She answered the door before he even rang the bell. "Bethany," he gasped. "What have you done to your hair?" It was bobbed on one side, French braided on the other. "Bethany's not here," she said. "I'm Anybeth & I hate the world's rules." She slammed the door on his shocked face.
