"Slowly. Back away slowly." 
I heard those words fall out of my friend Tom's mouth and slowly turned my head around. There it was, standing 10 feet tall, and looming over me and my friend, ready to eat us.

The beast had sharp teeth, with brown and red pieces stuck between them, like he’d eaten several caramel apples. It lunged at us, but Tom pulled me into a nearby closet just in time. “Now what?” I asked as he shut the door behind us, “We can’t stay here forever.”

Tom held a finger to his lips in a “shh” motion. His eyes pleaded. I fell silent. There was a huffing around the door, a confused purr, then the sound of huge paws padding away. It turned out to be a juvenile monster that had not yet developed object permanence.
