Night Owls

Jerry glanced down at the photograph in his hand, then back up again at the woman sitting alone at the back of the cafe.

She looked just like the woman in his picture. They weren’t exactly the same; the girl in the photo had a short, blonde bob, and in front of him was a braided brunette. But their faces were nearly identical.

All at once a blinding light coursed through the space. Jerry and the woman froze. And then a creature appeared, seemingly from the air itself.

He had never seen something so grotesque. The creature’s eye pierced through the dust that it sent flying. Jerry looked at the woman, and, with a twinge of guilt, picked her up and threw her in the direction of the monster. The creature chomped down, and Jerry made his escape.
