In the end, it wasn’t his fault
Nor was it hers.

They realized it was the fault of their 10 year old son. They just couldn't figure out how he did it.

Him being wheelchair bound made it seem nearly impossible for him to be the cause of her death. But here they were staring at a diary with the most gruesome drawings they’d ever seen.

The detective said, “I don’t accept the premise of your statement. A wheelchair user can do all kinds of things, including murder most foul. You don’t use your legs to stab, shoot, or poison somebody. He’s still a prime suspect.”

Old Man Whittier sputtered, "But my wife was killed by a falling anvil on top of a ladder. How could I have set that up? I'm a paraplegic, man!" The detective cuffed Whittier anyway. "Truth is," he grumbled, "I just don't like your face. Book em, Danno." Danno shrugged & obeyed.

The door creaked open, revealing a long forgotten room. Hesitance filled the orphan’s stomachs but that feeling soon wore off. Hand in hand, they inched forward.

Yes, you read that right. The orphan had several stomachs, and 3/4 of them were full of dread. The fourth one was full of Froot Loops and Count Chocula. Never give an orphan unlimited access to sugar cereal: they’ll eat the entire box in one sitting. A careful reader might ask:

"Do the multiple stomachs imply that the orphans are, in fact, cows?" The answer to this question is, "Yes. Unequivocally, yes." It was on this cow-orphan farm that Jesse, the farmer's innocent but ravishing daughter, made a discovery. She raced barefoot through the field, crying

"The cows!" Jessie sobbed into her hands in despair. "The cows are orphans because of me! I didn't mean to eat their mother, I just really wanted a Big Mac!"

Officer Dan, still in his cereal-stained uniform, patted her back. “It’s okay, kid. We’ve all been there. Last week I took out a family of chickens over a bucket of extra crispy.” Behind him, the orphaned calves stared through the glass, plotting with a quiet, milky vengeance.

Mama didn’t like when Jase burnt things in the kitchen, the smell lingered for days. Jase sighed to himself and hungrily walked the remnants of the meatloaf to the trash can. As he opened the lid, a crumpled piece of notebook paper sat on top of rubbish…

It read “LOW AND SLOW” in neat block capital letters. He opened the folded note and read the writing inside. “Turn the heat down and cook it longer. Trust me. Love, T.G.” From that day on, Jase became a great chef, thanks to the subtle intervention of The Trashcan Gourmet.

The cannon had taken them all out, he was the only one left now, however they continued to fire, and he didn’t have much time left.

Simon's brother approached him as clots of dirt rained down. "We gotta go!" he cried. Simon shook his head. He wasn't done reading "Animal Farm". "The book report's due tomorrow!" he yelled over the explosions' thunder. "Are you nuts?" his brother cried. "There's a war going on!"

Simon said softly “don’t you see? This book is about the war raging around us. The clues are all there. Four legs good, two legs better!”
He tapped the page for emphasis. “The question is, are we the pigs or are we the horses?”

“I don’t know daddy, but I’d rather be a horse because people sure love bacon!” Luna said braiding the doll that sat in her lap. “Anyways, can you paint my nails yet?” She finished, looking at Simon with those puppy dog eyes.

“Sure thing Luna.” And with that, Simon cradled her hoof softly in his blacksmith hands and began carefully inspecting Luna’s right horseshoe. “Any particular color?” he asked. Luna whinnied and said, “moonstone, please.”

Jerry glanced down at the photograph in his hand, then back up again at the woman sitting alone at the back of the cafe.

Her hair was much shorter than it was when he last saw her; her golden curls dangling at her shoulders.

All at once a blinding light coursed through the space. Jerry and the woman froze. And then a creature appeared, seemingly from the air itself.

They both expected the creature to lunge at their throats but instead it circled around the lake before them.
